The story now goes past the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, covering territory no previous Dynasty Warriors game ever touched .

The best part? The story is actually good this time. Like, surprisingly engaging for a game about mindlessly killing dudes. Omega Force finally realized that having a coherent narrative makes the mindless killing more fun. Characters die when they’re supposed to die. You feel things. It’s weird, but it works.

How Does It Actually Play?

Alright, let me break this down properly, because the gameplay in DW7 is where things get interesting.

The combat system is back to basics (in a good way).

Remember that terrible Renbu system from DW6? Gone. Completely removed . We’re back to the classic charge system – you know, the one where you press square a few times and then triangle to do a cool move. It’s familiar, it’s satisfying, and it actually lets you control what you’re doing.

You can now equip two weapons at once and switch between them during battle . Hit the switch attack button and your character does a special move while swapping weapons. It’s flashy, it’s useful, and it adds a layer of strategy that wasn’t there before.

Every character has an “EX” weapon.

Each officer is specially trained in one weapon type. Use that weapon, and you unlock a unique EX attack – basically a super move that only that character can do . Xiahou Dun with a sword does a fire shockwave thing. Sun Ce with tonfas does something completely different. It gives each character personality even when the basic movesets are shared.

The downside? There’s a LOT of weapon cloning. Most sword users have the exact same basic combo strings . It’s a bit lazy, I’ll be honest. But the unique Musou attacks (the super moves) and EX attacks do enough to make officers feel distinct.

Dynasty Warriors 7 flips that. Musou Mode is split into four campaigns – one for Wei, Wu, Shu, and the new Jin kingdom . You play through each kingdom’s entire history, switching between different officers depending on which battle you’re in . Zhao Yun leads the charge at Changban. Zhang Fei handles the rear guard. It flows naturally and tells a much better story.

The only catch? Musou Mode is single-player only . No co-op in the main story. That’s a bummer for people who want to slash through thousands of soldiers with a friend.

Conquest Mode replaces Free Mode.

Remember Free Mode from older games where you could replay any stage with any character? That’s gone. In its place is Conquest Mode (called Chronicle Mode in Japan) .

Here’s how it works. You pick any unlocked character, and you’re dropped onto a giant honeycomb grid representing China . Every tile is a battle, a city, a special objective. You complete battles, unlock adjacent tiles, and gradually dominate the whole map.

This mode is MASSIVE. Character-specific historical battles that weren’t important enough for Story Mode? They’re here. Grinding for rare weapons and mounts? Also here. Building bonds with other characters so they help you in battle? Yep. It’s the mode you’ll sink dozens of hours into after finishing the stories .

Plus, Conquest Mode actually has co-op. Online and offline . The online setup is a bit hidden and awkward, but when it works, it’s fun.

The weapon system is deeper than it looks.

Every weapon has “Seals” – special abilities like Attack+, Defense+, Movement Speed, Officer Assassin (raises attack/defense against officers), and Seal Master . You unlock seals by defeating enemies, then socket them into empty weapon slots.

The result? You can really customize your favorite character. Want a speed-focused build? Go for movement speed seals. Want a tank? Stack defense and health. There’s variety here if you look for it.

Swimming and climbing are still here.

DW6 introduced swimming and climbing ladders. DW7 kept them . They’re small features, but they make the battlefields feel more dynamic. No more being blocked by a tiny river.

Support animals are a thing now.
