What Is Realm of Ink All About?

Okay, imagine a fast-paced action game mixed with the “try, die, retry” loop of Hades or Dead Cells. Now paint the whole thing with a beautiful Chinese ink-wash art style. That’s Realm of Ink in a nutshell.

You play as Red, a swordswoman on a mission to hunt down a Fox Demon . Simple enough, right? But here’s the twist. She soon discovers that her life isn’t really her own. Her fate has already been written by some mysterious force . The whole game is about breaking free from that destiny and figuring out who—or what—is pulling the strings.

The world you’re thrown into is called the “Realm of Ink.” It’s constantly shifting and changing . Every time you die, you come back. The levels are rearranged. But you keep your memories (and some of your upgrades). That’s the roguelite formula in action.

The setting draws heavily from Eastern fantasy. You’ll fight your way through Buddhist forests, frozen monkey kingdoms, spooky waterlands, and ancient ruins . Each area has a guardian with a tragic backstory waiting for you to uncover. The enemies are straight out of Chinese folklore. Fox Demons, Peony Fairies, Mirror Sprites. They all have unique stories and personalities .

Oh, and you’re not alone. You have a little Ink Pet named Momo fighting alongside you . It’s adorable. But don’t let the cuteness fool you. This little guy can evolve into over 15 different forms depending on how you build your character . It becomes a real powerhouse.

How Does It Actually Play?

Let me tell you, the gameplay loop here is dangerously addictive. I’ve personally lost many lunch breaks to this game.

The combat is simple to learn, hard to master.
You have your basic attacks, heavy attacks, dodges, and special abilities. Only about six buttons to worry about . The game starts off pretty easy, almost too easy. But as you crank up the difficulty? It gets brutally challenging. The higher difficulties will absolutely test your patience and your skill.

The secret sauce is the builds.
This is where Realm of Ink really shines. The game has something called “Ink Gems.” These are special power-ups that completely change how you play. There are over 40 of them .

Let me give you an example. There’s a combo that reviewers and players absolutely love. You take the Shield Ink (which damages enemies whenever you get hit) and pair it with the Quake Ink (which gives you a massive shield that scales with your health) . Suddenly, you aren’t just dodging and attacking. You’re an unkillable tank who kills enemies just by standing there and letting them hit you. It’s hilarious and incredibly satisfying.

You can equip two Ink Gems at a time . So the mix-and-match potential is huge. Are you a speed demon? There’s a build for that. Do you like summoning minions? There’s a build for that too. Magic spam? Yep.

Forms change everything.
Red can equip different “forms” (basically skins of other characters). There are nine of them . These aren’t just cosmetic. They change your stats and playstyle entirely. One form might make you super fast. Another might turn you into a slow, heavy-hitting tank. It adds so much variety to the runs.

Endless Mode is the ultimate test.
Think you’re good? Try Endless Mode. It’s a roguelite inside your roguelite. Endless hordes of enemies spawn, and you just fight until you die . It’s perfect for when you want to turn off your brain and just slash things.

Where it stumbles (a little).
The game isn’t perfect. Right now, the quality-of-life features are lacking . You can’t skip dialogue or cutscenes easily. You have to mash the spacebar. You also can’t preview the different forms before you buy them. You just have to gamble your hard-earned resources and hope you like the playstyle. That’s annoying.

Also, the 1.0 version just dropped on May 26, 2026 . While the Early Access was well-received (“Very Positive” on Steam), there are always some rough edges when a game goes from beta to full launch. Keep an eye on the community forums for any day-one patches.

We see a lot of pixel-art roguelites. They are great, but sometimes you want something that looks like a painting that came to life. Realm of Ink uses an ink-wash art style that is just stunning to look at . It feels premium. It feels different.

And the build variety? Insane. The reviewer at Game8 put it best: “You’re more likely to exhaust every ending the game has before you run out of viable equipment and perk combinations to try” . You can play this game for 50 hours and still discover a new combo that breaks the game in a fun way.

The story is also surprisingly deep. Because you are “rewriting fate,” there are multiple endings . Your actions in the runs determine how the story ends. That gives you a reason to keep playing beyond just “number go up.”
