So, What Exactly Is WWE 2K20 Digital Deluxe Edition?

Alright, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. WWE 2K20 is famous. But not for good reasons.

This game came out in October 2019, and it was a disaster. Glitches everywhere. Crashes. Characters with their limbs stretching across the screen like they were made of rubber. It was so bad that 2K actually took a year off from making WWE games after this. No WWE 2K21 at all. That’s how broken this launch was.

But here’s the thing. The Digital Deluxe Edition? It actually has a LOT of cool stuff packed into it. If you can get past the technical mess, there’s a real game buried under there.

The story mode is called “The Bump in the Night” (that’s the pre-order bonus that comes with Deluxe). It features “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt as the main villain. You play through these horror-themed wrestling matches that are actually pretty creative. There’s a haunted house. There’s a graveyard match. It’s silly and fun.

The Deluxe Edition is basically the VIP package. You get the base game, plus ALL the DLC content. That includes four “Originals” – themed story packs. Each one adds new characters, arenas, and story chapters. There’s the horror one (Bump in the Night), a Southpaw Regional Wrestling comedy one, an Empire of Tomorrow sci-fi one, and a Wasteland Mad Max-style one.

You also get the SmackDown 20th Anniversary content. That’s Hulk Hogan, Chyna, The Rock in his $500 shirt outfit, and Rock n’ Sock Connection Mankind. And here’s the crazy part – Chyna had NEVER been in a WWE game before this. That’s a big deal for wrestling fans.

Then there’s the Accelerator and MyPLAYER Kickstart. The Accelerator instantly unlocks everything in the game. All wrestlers, all arenas, all belts. No grinding. The Kickstart gives your created wrestler 25 extra attribute points, 8 skill points, 25,000 VC, and a bunch of other boosts.

So on paper? This edition is STACKED. In practice? Well…

How Does It Actually Play?

Let me be completely honest with you.

The launch was a disaster.

When WWE 2K20 dropped, it was broken. Not “a few bugs” broken. I mean “characters turning into spaghetti monsters” broken. “Game crashes every hour” broken. “Animations look like a PS2 game” broken.

The studio behind the previous games, Yuke’s, left after WWE 2K19. Visual Concepts took over, and they clearly didn’t have enough time to finish the game. The result was a technical nightmare.

But patches fixed a lot.

Over the months after release, 2K put out a bunch of updates. The game is MUCH more stable now than it was at launch. Most of the game-breaking bugs are gone. The graphics still aren’t great – one reviewer noted that if you gave them screenshots from previous entries, they couldn’t tell the difference. But at least your wrestlers don’t turn into stretchy monsters anymore.

The controls are complicated.

This is not a pick-up-and-play wrestling game. There’s a LOT of buttons to remember. Grapple, strike, Irish whip, reversals, signatures, finishers. And the game doesn’t have a good practice mode to teach you. You’ll need to spend time learning the system before you can really enjoy it.

And if you’re playing on PC with keyboard and mouse? Good luck. The controls were clearly designed for a controller. The keyboard controls are awkward and not customizable. If you’re on PC, use a controller. Trust me.

The new “Originals” content is the best part.

The DLC packs that come with the Deluxe Edition are genuinely creative. They lean into the fact that wrestling is already kind of ridiculous and turn it up to 11. The Fiend’s horror story is cool. Southpaw Regional Wrestling is hilarious. The sci-fi and post-apocalyptic ones are fun diversions from the regular WWE stuff.

The roster is decent but not amazing.

You get the standard modern WWE roster – Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, Charlotte Flair, etc. The Deluxe Edition adds legends like Hulk Hogan, Chyna, The Rock, Mankind, and a few others.

The Create-a-Wrestler mode is pretty robust. But there are weird restrictions – limited slots for custom characters (100 total, only 20 downloadable), and some options just aren’t available for no reason.

MyCareer mode is… a choice.

The story mode has you create two wrestlers (one male, one female). But then the game basically ignores your creations and tells a story about characters named “Red” and “Tre”. It’s jarring. You put all this time into making someone, and then the cutscenes talk about completely different people. The dialogue is cliché. The story is forgettable. It’s not the mode’s finest moment.

The DLC content is genuinely good.

The four Originals stories are the highlight. Bump in the Night with The Fiend is cool. Southpaw Regional Wrestling is legitimately funny. Empire of Tomorrow and Wasteland are fun what-if scenarios. If you buy the standard edition, you don’t get any of this. The Deluxe Edition gives you everything.

Chyna is finally in a WWE game.

This is a big deal for wrestling fans. Chyna was one of the most iconic women in wrestling history, and for YEARS she wasn’t in WWE games due to licensing issues. WWE 2K20 finally made it happen.

The Accelerator saves you time.

Wrestling games have tons of unlockables. Normally, you’d need to grind through hundreds of matches to unlock everything. The Accelerator gives you instant access to all unlockable content. For busy adults who just want to play, that’s a blessing.

It’s the last “traditional” WWE game.

After WWE 2K20’s failure, 2K took a year off. When they came back with WWE 2K22, the gameplay was completely overhauled. Different controls, different pacing, different feel. So WWE 2K20 is the end of an era – the last game with that classic Yuke’s-style gameplay (even though Visual Concepts built it).

You can get it for pocket change now.

Because the reputation is so bad, you can find WWE 2K20 Digital Deluxe on sale for like $10-15. Sometimes less. One Steam reviewer said they got the Digital Deluxe for $20 and still felt it was pushing the limit. Wait for a deep sale. Don’t pay full price.

The Not-So-Great Stuff (Being Honest)

I always try to give you the full picture. So here’s where this game still struggles.

The bugs never fully went away.

Patches helped a LOT. But some jank remains. Animations can still look weird. Hair physics are bad. Occasional crashes still happen. It’s playable now, but it’s not polished.

The graphics are last-gen.

For a game that came out in 2019, WWE 2K20 looks like it belongs on PS3. The character models are fine, but the lighting, the crowd, the arenas – none of it looks current. The reviewer who said it feels like an Xbox 360 game wasn’t wrong.

MyCareer is disappointing.

You’d think with the Deluxe Edition’s MyPLAYER Kickstart, the career mode would be great. But the story is weak. Your created characters don’t matter. The dialogue is bad. The cutscenes are unskippable. It’s a chore to get through.

No cross-play, no cross-save.

If you buy the game on PC and later want to play on console? Nope. Your progress doesn’t transfer. Online is platform-specific.

The PC port is lacking.

60 FPS lock. No ultra-wide support. Keyboard controls are a nightmare. You can’t rebind keys. It’s clear the PC version was an afterthought.
